FAQ
In our meetings, the focus will be on enhancing your quality of life through the counselling process. In general, it appears to offer increased self-awareness, improved thought management, confidence, and enhanced communication skills.
In order to accomplish this, we will begin by determining your identity and priorities. Together, you and I will develop a strategy here that we will adhere to during our sessions. Moving ahead, we will collaborate to reach the specific result that you have pinpointed.
It’s okay if you’re unsure of what you want; you don’t need a specific issue or obstacle to start counselling. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary consultation, where we can begin pinpointing your priorities.
Although counselling sessions may differ from one another, they typically follow a structure that aligns with our 50-minute clinical hour.
At the start of a session, I usually ask you to talk about recent happenings, thoughts, concerns, or any specific objectives you wish to address during our time together.
You will have the opportunity to express your thoughts freely. I will pay close attention and inquire with consideration. You will not face criticism, interruptions, or judgment while you are speaking. Your dialogue will remain private. This type of conversation allows you to express your thoughts without fear of causing harm or repercussions in a relationship. You can share openly and truthfully without any restrictions. Any thoughts or feelings you want to express are acceptable.
By the conclusion of the counselling session, we typically end by reviewing something for you to contemplate or a resource that may aid in our discussion during the session. In this manner, the work can proceed all week long and not be restricted only to clinical hours.
Counselling involves a special kind of dialogue where you will experience being truly listened to. We will work together to talk about and pinpoint your goals (such as enhancing your mood, handling procrastination, lowering anxiety, etc..) and create a treatment plan for how I can offer you the most support.
I provide two primary forms of counselling assistance: brief and extended therapy sessions. Short-term therapy aims to decrease unwanted behaviours (such as anger or substance use) or enhance healthy behaviours (like improving communication or boosting confidence) by focusing on the present and future. Extended therapy typically involves delving into the past and understanding the causes behind unwanted behaviours or barriers preventing the adoption of healthy behaviours.
In dealing with a particular problem like anxiety or depression, I typically recommend engaging in 6-12 therapy sessions utilizing a cognitive therapeutic method like CBT, ACT, or DBT. Psychometric screenings and evaluations show that the majority of clients experience relief and a stronger sense of control over their issues after 12 sessions.
The sessions are akin to an organized dialogue; you can discuss your current struggles, and I will guide you in learning methods to cope effectively (such as managing panic attacks, overcoming driving anxiety, stopping racing thoughts, etc…).
If the issue has been ongoing for many years and the nervous system has been constantly active for an extended period, additional sessions may be necessary to solidify new thought patterns or develop abilities to strengthen your psychological resources.
Clients often see improvement within 6-12 sessions and may choose to have regular follow-up sessions monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly to keep up their progress.
Long-term therapy is a good choice if you need a professional for ongoing support and to keep a strong therapeutic alliance.
Long-term therapy doesn’t need to be on a weekly or bi-weekly basis in order to develop skills, but instead, I can grow into a professional who will comprehend your unique history. This enables me to be a valuable asset during challenging times in your adventure.
I have observed that clients frequently undergo significant personal development in this environment, as the organized sessions ensure they stay responsible for their objectives, and impactful discussions can occur regarding obstacles or difficulties.
Indeed, I provide a complimentary 20-minute phone or video consultation.
This meeting will allow you to learn more about me before starting therapy. You are welcome to inquire about any questions you may have and gain an understanding of the steps we will take to achieve your counselling objectives. The consultation is not required but is provided so you can ask any questions before booking an appointment.
Kindly complete a contact form located at the bottom of the page or email me to set up a complimentary consultation.
I acknowledge that unforeseen events happen in life, and as long as you give at least 24 hours notice, there will be no fee for cancelled sessions.
Failure to show up or give adequate notice for a scheduled appointment could result in a fee being imposed. This standard is in place not for punishment but to ensure that the clinical time in my schedule is dedicated to client work. If a session is cancelled shortly before the scheduled time, it prevents another client from taking that time slot.
Maintaining privacy is crucial during counselling sessions. Any information shared before, during, or after the session will not be disclosed to anyone without consulting you and obtaining your written approval. Written identification or data will be encrypted and secured with two locks when not being monitored. Every online session is password-protected and encrypted.
However, there are three circumstances in which we must reveal information despite maintaining confidentiality.
Responsibility to Inform: If there is an immediate danger of harmful behaviour towards yourself or another person, it is my responsibility to alert the proper authorities. Furthermore, in the event that I encounter any instances of child, elder, or dependent adult abuse, whether confirmed or suspected, I am obligated to notify the relevant authorities. I will inform you openly if I believe there is a responsibility to alert individuals, and my communication will not be kept confidential or hidden from you.
Court Subpoenas: When a lawyer thinks a client’s therapist could provide important information for their case, they will request that therapist’s records through a subpoena. As a result, if you find yourself in a legal situation and there is a chance my documents related to you could be requested, you must inform me.
Consultation: I typically do not participate in consultations as I am in private practice. If I believe it would help you, I might consult with another expert to explore different viewpoints and possible choices. Your identity will remain confidential during any possible consultation.
My fees are not covered by Medical Services Plan (MSP), but as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC # 20534) with a Masters of Education in School Counselling my services are covered by most extended health benefits. Each plan is different, so it is important to check with your employer’s extended health benefits to verify if they cover a Registered Clinical Counsellor.
